Lincoln Highway Extra Day on Friday, June 19

Start in the morning in Chester, WV home of the “World’s Largest Teapot.” The LHA on-line map shows THREE 1928 concrete markers nearby. Pick up some coffee and donuts at Frank’s Pastry Shop and take in the Ohio River views at the former Chester Bridge at the east end of town. Plan your day as you head east along the Lincoln Highway to Pittsburgh.

Additional Lincoln Highway Points of Interest are found via the LHA on-line map at https://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map/.

Pittsburgh was the gateway of the western frontier and where the England and French battled for supremacy during the War of 1812. While Lincoln Highway navigation is complicated in the city, your exploration is worth the efforts. We’d recommend spending the afternoon at America’s number one museum, The Senator John Heinz History Center, in the Strip District. Lunch could include a sandwich with fries on top at Primanti Brothers or perhaps the reincarnation of Isaly’s will be open by June 2026. The Strip District has a variety of food places and shops that you’ll want to explore.

For the evening, we suggest a ride on the Duquesne Incline to a grand view overlooking the city. There are many places for dinner either at the top or nearby at Station Square along the Monongahela River. A full lineup of food, lodging and local events for your stay can be found at Visit Pittsburgh.

If you want to stay in Pittsburgh, there is no better historical hotel than The William Penn where many early Lincoln Highway travelers spent the night. Go to https://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/pittsburgh-william-penn to book your luxury room for the night.

Two Pittsburgh Lincoln Highway enthusiasts will be speaking at our conference on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026. Rick Sebak has entertained us with his PBS documentaries for decades, including “A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway.” Brian Butko, is Director of Publications for the Heinz History Center and perhaps best known to us as the author of “The Lincoln Highway, Pennsylvania Traveler’s Guide.” A complete schedule for Wednesday is available at https://lincoln250pa.org/itinerary-for-wednesday-june-24-2026/
