Some folks will be headed to the conference from east to west so we wanted to highlight some stops for people flying into New York City or driving along the Lincoln Highway through New Jersey on the way to Philadelphia and then York. You may also want to plan some of these stops for after the conference. Either direction is a fabulous road trip even if the traffic can be heavy at peak times of travel.
The New Jersey and Pennsylvania LHA state marker is unique in that it is the last remaining state marker still at it’s original location. You’ll see it as you pass over the Calhoun Street Bridge over the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. Still lost? Check out Point of Interest on the LHA on-line map in Morrisville, PA.
Another great stop in Bucks County is the Bensalem Byberry Turnpike stone bridge in Benjamin Rush State Park. This recently restored treasure was along the King’s Highway and takes us back to Colonial travel days. How many Revolutionary War era solders and prisoners marched over this bridge and along the King’s Highway on the road that became what we today know as the Lincoln Highway?
In Philadelphia, check out the Packard Motor Car Building at 317 North Broad Street. It’s now luxury apartments but it was originally a Lincoln Highway Control Station for automobile tourist looking for information in the City of Brotherly Love. Heading west don’t miss the newly remodeled William H. Grey 30th Street Station Building for the architecture and art. Both Amtrak and SEPTA regional rail service intersect here.
As you continue west, recommend a short detour to the American Treasure Tour Museum in Oaks, PA in Montgomery County. This one of a kind retro experience will bring back many marvelous memories. In Delaware County, stop by another early Lincoln Highway Control Station, the Wayne Hotel at 139 East Lancaster Avenue in Wayne. If you don’t have time to stay overnight, enjoy a meal on the front porch overlooking the Lincoln Highway. The vintage Pure Oil Cottage Service Station is still standing at 7 West Lancaster Avenue in Devon as the Kelly Christine Design Floral Shop. For a taste of Revolutionary War history stop by the Paoli Battlefield and the General Warren Inn at 9 Old Lancaster Road in Malvern.
Chester County is the place to relax and enjoy some good diner food. We’d recommend either the Downingtown Diner at 81 West Lancaster Avenue in Downingtown, the Happy Days Finer Diner at 2470 Lincoln Highway East in Thorndale, the Lincoln Diner at 1202 West Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, or Harry’s Hot Dogs at 2949 Lincoln Highway in Sadsburyville. Any of these stops will satisfy your hunger for good diner food along the Main Line. For the history buffs, check out the National Iron and Steel Heritage Museum in Coatesville.
Finally, we are currently working with the Old Caln Historical Society to install a replica 1928 Lincoln Highway Concrete Marker somewhere in the Thorndale area along the Lincoln Highway. They have purchased the marker and now making final plans for installation. If they complete this before the conference, we’ll post the details on the PA Chapter LHA Facebook page. We can’t wait!
