This interesting mid-century advertisement is in the Agricultural and Industrial Museum in York, PA. It claims that 7 of 10 ice cream scoops made in the United States were “York frozen.” What does that mean? At the time, York International was the largest manufacturer of freezers in the country and most ice cream manufacturers used York International freezers in their plants. Makes sense given our large dairy industry.
Columbia, Pennsylvania
We still know a thing or two about making great tasting ice cream and Columbia has a trifecta of ice cream places you’ll want to check out. The Turkey Hill Experience is a place where you can learn all about delicious ice cream. You can even create your own flavor. If you’re not visiting on the Tuesday bus tour, you can still taste some ice cream as an extra day stop.

Across town, Hinkle’s Restaurant features an authentic ice cream parlor where you can find a variety of flavors, sundaes and even ice cream sodas. They feature Hershey’s Ice Cream products. Their invitation to Meet. Eat. and Smile! rings true.
Around the corner you’ll find Griddles Malt Shoppe where you be transported back to the 50’s and glad you did. Their milkshakes and malts are great to wash down your favorite burger and fries. Another can’t miss place to experience.

Heading back west along the Lincoln Highway (PA 462) you’d think that we wouldn’t have as many ice cream places to recommend, but they can be found almost as close together as Lincoln Highway concrete markers. Here’s some of our favorites.
York County, Pennsylvania
Jim Mack’s Ice Cream between Wrightsville and Hallam along the Lincoln Highway has been making delicious ice cream here since 1958. They have anything you’d want on a drive-in menu and even have a 24-hole miniature golf course for family outings. “Home of the Thick Chocolate Malt!”

As you head further west towards York you’ll start seeing the classic Dairy Queen and franchise Rita’s Italian Ice. If you’re not going to Philadelphia this will give you an idea of what their water ice tastes like. You can’t go wrong with either place whether you crave a Blizzard or a Concrete Mixer.
Heading into Adams County, try the Half-Pint Creamery on the east side of New Oxford. Their Pup-entine Boxes are a treat that your traveling canine friend will love to enjoy along the side of the road. We all need a rest stop now and then.

We’re running out of time and calories so let’s jump further west to two of our favorite ice cream shops. The Igloo Ice Cream in Everett not only has delicious ice cream flavors but it is also housed in a unique road side attraction that looks like an igloo. Stop in and find out it’s history.
Did you know that the banana split was invented in Latrobe? If you can’t wait for the annual Great American Banana Split Celebration you can find a good banana split nearby at Valley Dairy Restaurant.
Ok, we have to stop eating ice cream before we get a brain freeze. You can find more places to visit along Pennsylvania’s Ice Cream Trail. Happy scooping!
